Roller shades are nothing new they have been around for a long time. They used to be really popular and were once hanging in a lot of windows. There are some that has stood the test of time and are still hanging around. But the majority of the older window shades are long gone by now. There are parts inside of the roller on the top section that would and could get damaged, they would break down over time and with repeated use, and just all around have stood well to the test of time.

They had all sorts of colors and prints available and came in blackout or regular. The blackout shades had a coating on the backside of the shade that would allow you to almost completely block all of the sunlight. Once these shades get a little age on them they start to fail and their problems show. They were mechanical shades so they could fail with age or abuse.

Now if the roller shade get stuck in place and you cant roll it by hand you will only have the choice of getting a new roller unit. This way you will be able to keep the look of you old shade. And this is good because it will be hard to find window shades that have the same print to match your room if they have any age to them.

Other problems that plague these shades are the fabric getting stuck in the roller assembly and getting damaged. There was a really popular version of this shade called a blackout shade. It had a coating on the fabric enabling it to black out ambient light. And the older fabrics just straight up aren’t going to hold up like fabrics of today will most notably the fabrics made of polyester.

With all of the damage that happened to the fabric has given the roller shade a kind of bad name over the years because people would keep them around with worn fabrics. And lots of people have tried to replace the fabric and found it not so easy a task.

These window shades also had problems messing up the windowsills. The bottom bar after repeated use would mark the windows. This damage was caused by an improper fit in the window and was easily repaired by cutting the bottom bar. Also if the shade weren’t perfectly level in the window you would wind up damaging the fabric.

Even though many people did repair their shades it was and still is best policy to just replace the window shades. The newer hardware and fabric is of much better quality and will last longer than a repair.

Even though the roller shade has its own problems, it is one of the better ways to get you some privacy and look good doing it. The rolling shade had always been a staple in home design and always will be as far as I can see. They will always have a place in my heart. They have come out with better designs over the years but you will never replace the nostalgia of the shades. And some would say the style. At least the blur that you can get today, it’s a really nice look.
